In-4, demi basane (reliure XX°), dos frotté, VIII + 351 pp.

Loriginale est publiée en 1796 (2 volumes in-8), une troisième avec un portrait de Laplace en 1808 in-4 (il nen faut pas dans cette édition).

Traité dastronomie dans lequel lavènement des mathématiques dans le champ de cette science est déterminant. Il expose létat du savoir cosmologique à la fin du 18ème siècle. Les parties traitent des mouvements des corps célestes, apparents et réels ,des lois du mouvement de la pesanteur universelle et de lhistoire de lastronomie.

Lauteur y démontre un déterminisme total : "Nous devons donc envisager létat présent de lunivers comme leffet de son état antérieur et comme la cause de celui qui va suivre". Les sciences mathématiques deviennent donc les sondeurs de linconnu comme lhypothèse des trous noirs quaura Laplace !
